Bereits 2013 haben die Wittlager Gemeinden mit dem Landkreis Osnabrück und dem örtlichen Unterhaltungsverband (UHV) eine „Vereinbarung über eine gemeinsame Initiative zur Umsetzung wasserwirtschaftlicher und landespflegerischer Maßnahmen im Einzugsgebiet des Dümmers geschlossen. Eine der Kompensationsmaßnahmen, die in diesem Rahmen 2017 umgesetzt wurde, haben die Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten der SPD Bad Essen jetzt besichtigt. Der Geschäftsführer des UHV Nr. 70 „Obere Hunte“, Uwe Bühning, stellte den Gästen die Renaturierungsmaßnahme am Wimmerbach vor. Ein beispielhaftes Projekt, bei dem das Gewässer auf 700 Metern Länge kleinräumig verengt bzw. verlegt wurde und sogenannte Sekundärauen entstanden sind. Dadurch konnte der Nährstoffeintrag (insbesondere Phosphat) in den Dümmer deutlich reduziert werden. Zudem entstanden neue Lebensräume für Tiere und Pflanzen und auch dem verbesserten Hochwasserschutz dienen die neuen Retentionsflächen. „Das ist der richtige Weg, den wir weiter beschreiten wollen“, so lautete das einmütige Fazit an diesem Abend.
